No Recession for Small Business with Websites?

Posted: Jul 05, 2008

I came across a series of interesting articles from major media publications demonstrating that small businesses with websites are not experiencing the same economic fallout that other more traditional “offline” businesses seem to be. If you’ve been considering investing in a website but still unsure if it would help or hurt you, I recommend you look this over.

When we use the term “offline” business, we are referring to those businesses that do not make money online. But as these articles demonstrate, the owners of these businesses have certainly not left their web presence to chance.

U.S. News and World Report has an excellent article entitled Online Retailing Offers a Bright Spot which was just published April 28, 2008. In other words, this isn’t some pie-in-the-sky report written before gas was $4/gallon. Oddly, U.S. News and World Report are having financial difficulties themselves (as is the entire magazine business) and...

Questions to Ask your next Web Designer

Posted: Jun 01, 2008

We are often approached by potential clients who have had a bad experience with a prior web designer or developer. Quite often, this costs our client extra as we have to spend time to clean up another developer’s “mess”. Sometimes, it seems to be just a case of poor communication.

With that in mind, we’d like to offer this checklist of questions to ask yourself (or your future web designer/developer) before you take the plunge into your next project.

It’s all too common for a client to be impressed by a pretty website design on a web designer’s portfolio and not ask certain questions before signing an agreement or paying for a website. A pretty portfolio is not enough – and quite often can be misleading.

1. Does the designer’s own website meet established criteria for website design?

Take a good hard look at the designer’s own website. It doesn’t have to be your...

Why Content Management is Crucial

Posted: Apr 09, 2008

As our clients have upgraded to using a professional content management system, we’ve had the pleasure of seeing their productivity increase and their interest in their own website improve.

Old school web design is one in which a web designer is always present and needed every time a client wants to make a change. Sometimes, clients attempt to “go it alone” by using some kind of all-in-one web editing tool (like FrontPage). We’ve even seen clients attempt to maintain websites using Microsoft Publisher or Word!

The beauty and simplicity of a content management system is that a client can easily update the appropriate sections of their website without having to worry about messing up the design. They don’t need a special tool or special software. They don’t need to call their web designer (and pay a bill).

Instead, they simply login to an administrative interface via the internet with a User ID...

BWH now part of Edison Web Services

Posted: Mar 17, 2008

Edison Web DesignI formed a new company in my spare time called Edison Web Services. Brevard Web Hosting is now officially part of Edison Web Services. What does this mean to you?

Nothing, but better service and reliability. Edison Web Services is really an umbrella over three other companies: Edison Web Design, Edison Web Hosting, and Brevard Web Hosting. For existing Brevard Web Hosting customers, there are no significant changes at this time.

However, for out-of-Brevard customers, a toll-free phone number and fax number is now available to better reach us.

Regardless, when you call us, expect to hear a greeting for Edison Web Services, but you’ll be able to dial an extension for existing BWH customers. I’ll have more information on the phone access soon, so stay tuned.

New Client Prices Going Up on December 15

Posted: Dec 04, 2007

The sad impact of inflation has taken its toll and even Brevard Web Hosting must bow the knee to it. As of December 15, 2007, we will be raising prices across the board and simplifying a few of our plans.

This does not affect current clients, nor any that purchase our services before Dec 15. Although the exact details haven’t been worked out yet, we will likely be raising most plans by $50 to $100, and probably eliminating one plan.

The good news is that our services now include even more features than ever. All new plans will, by default, include business blogging, and built-in commenting on all pages of a website. One client is already putting this to good use by using his “Testimonies” page to allow prior customers of his to post a comment there about how much they loved his service. No need for him to collect written testimonies...
